"This small, specialized shop has been in business for 20 years (in 1993 - ed.) and has built up an unchallenged reputation for reliability, expertise, and good value. If the owner, Mr. Nasser, is behind the counter or at work in his office workroom, you're in luck - you won't find a more knowledgeable gems expert in Chiang Mai."  source»

Turquoise in Chiang MaiThe pastel shades of turquoise have endeared it to many great cultures of antiquity: it has adorned the rulers of Ancient Egypt, the Aztecs, Persia, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and in ancient China since at least The Shang Dynasty.

Hardness and richness of colour are two of the major factors in determining the value of turquoise; while colour is a matter of individual taste, generally speaking, the most desirable is a strong sky to robin egg blue. Whatever the colour, for many applications, turquoise should not be soft or chalky; even if treated, such lesser material (to which most turquoise belongs) is liable to fade or discolour over time and will not hold up to normal use in jewellery.

Turquoise is consider a medium-soft stone especially in jewelry industry. Its hardness range from 5 to 6 Mohs. They are suitable for occasional jewelries, but not for daily use.

Topaz stone from Shiraz Jewelry in Chiang MaiHistory

In ancient times, just about any yellow gem was likely to be called topaz. The name itself may have been derived from a Sanskrit word meaning 'fire'.

The most important color variety of topaz is the range of yellow and brown gems. Golden-brown topaz is the most expensive color variety, with large faceted gems commanding prices of several hunderd dollars per carat.

Topaz, from any sources, is reasonably clean. The exception is with pink and red topaz, where only small stones are usually available. In these stones, slight inclusions are tolerated.

Topaz is very hard, at 8 on the Mohs scale, it wears well in jewelry.

Best quality unheated blue sapphire in Chiangmai, ThailandSince the beginning of Shiraz Co., Ltd. operation in the early '80s, we have carried and sold uncountable Sapphire gemstones to customers worldwide. This is one of the few favorite gemstones in Thailand, and for some, the reason why they've come so far.

The vast majority of Sapphire gemstones are nowadays, treated. Some treatment allow low grade yellow (yes, there are other colors than blue!) Sapphire into top color pinks. But of course, any treatments can now be detected -  by most jewelers. Blue Sapphire gemstones are among the most wanted sapphire in the world.

Shiraz has both treated and untreated - and yes, we'll tell you if one is treated and the price will typically lower. Travelers and residents of Chiang Mai have been purchasing either Ruby or Sapphire, or both, from us for the past over 30 years! And whatever your reason to buy Sapphire is, we can customise for you.

Peridot in Chiangmai ShirazPeridot gemstones can be purchased loose or in a setting. You can typically choose the setting and the peridot stones separately and have us put them together, or they can choose a pre-made jewelry piece that is already set. Peridot is located in the birthstone section.

Peridot gems bringing a unique green luxury to the jewelry industry. When you decided to buy it, what qualities to look for and how to buy the right gemstone for special occassion or for special one? There are 4C's to consider and crucial when making selection:

Color - The deeper green color is caused by the level of iron in the stone. Be sure that the color is even and intense regardless you choose lighter pistachio or a darker green shade, the color should be vivid and even.

Cut - Don't worry about it. Peridot can be shaped into nearly any gemstone shape, including round, oval, square, pear, emerald, and many more. But avoid those which seems misshapen or not proportionate.

Clarity - As a basic rule, get ones with no inclusions or less. Some small marks may be present, but overall, peridot gems have decent clarity by nature.

Carat - This is generally the major determinant of the size of gemstones, and in turn, determines the price to some extent.

Beware of imitation! Peridot has never been manufactured or man-made, but a number of imitations exist such as using a green glass replica. You can spot it right away it it is a glass when it doesn't have yellow factor in the stone, and glass only has a single reflection.

ruby in chiangmaiRuby is one of the most popular gemstones, and is used extensively in Jewelry. Ruby is used in all forms of jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings.

It is used both as centerpiece gemstone in pendants and rings, as well as a secondary stone to complete other gemstones like diamonds.

Ruby is thus named because of its red color (Latin - ruber). It was not until about 1800 that ruby, as well as sapphire, was recognized as belonging to the corundum species. Before that, red spinel and the red garnet were also designated as ruby. The red color varies within each individual deposit, so it is not possible to determine the source area from the color. The designations "Burma ruby" and "Siam ruby" are therefore strictly erroneous, and refer more to quality than origin. The most desirable color is the so-called "pigeon's blood", pure red with a hint of blue. The distribution of color is often uneven, in stripes or spots. The substance that provides the color is chromium, and in the case of brownish tones, ironis present as well. As a rougn stone, ruby appears dull and greasy, but, when cut, the luster can approach that of diamond. Heat treatment is commonly used to improve the color.

Ruby is the hardest mineral after diamond. However, the hardness varies in different directions. Ruby has no cleavage, but has certain preferred directions of parting. Because of brittleness, care must be taken when cutting and setting.

Inclusions are common. They are not always indicative of lower quality, but show the difference between a natural and a synthetic stone. The type of inclusion (minerals, growth structures, canals, or other cavities) often indicates the source area.

Large Ruby gems are extremely rare and valuable. In Shiraz, we have wide selection of Ruby for you to choose from. If you want to buy Ruby in Chiang Mai, please make sure that you have our address handy. Or you may contact us before making a visit.

Pearl Chiangmai ShirazMaximum beauty is not typically found in large pearls. They form, basically, by encapsulation of an irritant by tissues of a molluse. In Shiraz Jewelry, we have what is the right size for you.

Pearls are recovered from oysters, washed, and then sold to merchants. Then follows a bleaching operation, sorting, grading, and drilling. The value of pearls is a function of color, luster, orient, translucency, texture, and especially size.

It is common and fully acceptable for cultured pearls to be in the market nowadays. You may visit our shop to learn more about the difference between natural and cultured pearls. Importantly, trusting in our reputation makes it easier to buy pearls in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
